Lyon is France’s second largest and one of the country’s oldest cities, and is reputed as the gourmet capital of France. It’s large historic centre, Le Vieux Lyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is the largest ensemble of Renaissance buildings in Europe. It is the capital of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (popular ski destination) and sits at the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers. Its center reflects 2,000 years of history from the Roman Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux (Old) Lyon, to the modern Confluence district on Presqu’île peninsula. Lyon gives us a taste of authentic French culture and it is also the main city on the road and rail routes between Paris and the south of France, Paris and the Alps and Italy, and northern Europe and Spain.
